Freeing the Dancer’s Voice

A multidisciplinary day for dancers who sing and anyone who supports them.
From An American in Paris in New York and London, to the forthcoming production of Carousel in New York, and the removal of booth singers in shows such as Cats, increasing numbers of musical theatre dancer/singers are required to perform challenging dance routines whilst singing.
This event looks at the range of difficulties dancers can be faced with and how best to approach working together to support them.

Challenges in Voice and Speech Training for the Musical Theatre Performer
Laurann J Brown and Christine Mottram will talk about their approach to working with the Music Theatre students at Arts Ed when integrating dance and singing.

Difficulties with having to sing and dance simultaneously – An M.Sc research in musical theatre performers’ breathing
Tommi Sliiden will describe his journey from classical dancer to working in the ensembles
of many musicals, into Osteopathy and Performing Arts Medicine. He will then talk about
his 2017 research paper (“An Evaluation of the Breathing Strategies and Maximum Phonation Time in Musical Theater Performers During Controlled Performance Tasks”) which was the first study of its kind.
